There is no color difference between the sapwood and heartwood of beech. The wood is reddish-white in color and has the characteristics of mature wood. In some trees over eighty years old, a heartwood with darker reddish-brown stripes forms in the middle section. Its processing characteristics vary depending on growing conditions and moisture content. It shows moderate resistance when processed with hand tools and machines. It has excellent turning properties, and its bending properties are greatly improved by steaming. Pre-drilling is required for nailing. It glues easily, can be stained, and takes a very good finish.
