Why Wood?

Why Wood?

Wood is the building material that requires the least energy for its production and processing. Contrary to popular belief, using wood does not lead to the depletion of forests but rather ensures their more conscious preservation. Wood is lightweight, earthquake-resistant, more durable than concrete and steel, much easier to maintain than iron and steel, the most suitable building material for human metabolism, and easy to construct.

With their superior heat and moisture insulation properties, wooden structures provide the healthiest environment to live in. Concrete structures are toxic due to the radon gas they emit.

Contrary to popular belief, wood is more fire-resistant than concrete and steel. Today, in the US, large venues such as indoor sports arenas are being constructed with wooden frames to mitigate fire hazards, while in Germany, steel structures are being clad in wood for the same reason. Research and compiled statistics on fires clearly show that wood used as a structural material is one of the safest materials. Wood is never the cause of a fire, and due to its heat resistance and charring properties, it is possible to calculate exactly how long a wood-frame structure can withstand a major fire. Wooden structures can be designed to withstand fire for 30-90 minutes. However, bare steel structures (due to the high expansion coefficient of steel) can only withstand a normal fire for 10 minutes, collapsing instantly without warning.

Wood is still the top choice in terms of resistance to weather conditions and chemicals. The service life of wooden poles used in telecommunications lines and wooden highway bridges is 50 years. Treated pine lumber has a service life of 60 years. In the same areas, the lifespan of concrete, steel, and PVC can reach half that of wood. Wood is a building material that has proven its physical properties throughout history. With the protective materials and methods produced by today's technology, it has gained even more superior properties. Wood receives the highest rating in terms of reliability in earthquakes.

The weight-to-load-bearing capacity ratio of wood is higher than that of reinforced concrete and steel. One kilogram of wood carries more load than one kilogram of concrete or steel. With wood, spans of up to 250 meters can be achieved without columns. In such structures, steel cannot be used due to its heavy weight.
